There are increasing number of engines fitted with turbochargers, so it has been very important that their overhaul and repair are introduced into the system, and thus put also this aspect under the control. Turbocharger can cause the increased consumption of engine oil. Only after checking the engine, the turbocharger diagnostics can be done. The increased oil consumption of the turbocharger occurs when its shaft seals no longer seal properly. All the oil passing by the links partially burns in the engine or is discharged together with the exhaust gases. In both cases, a sure sign of increased oil consumption is blue exhaust smoke. After the installation of a new or a reconditioned turbocharger, it is mandatory to change the engine oil and oil and air filters, but also the cleaning of the suction system is recommended. Large amounts of engine oil could be retained in the air cooler (intercooler) if the engine had problems with turbocharger. If the intercooler cannot be completely cleaned, it is necessary to replace it.

The requirements for long life and proper operation of turbocharger are:

• regular replacement of engine oil and filters: the oil must be of adequate quality and viscosity
• regular replacement of air filters
• a turbocharged engine must not be revved up immediately after start
• the engine should not be turned off immediately after a hard drive, but it should be left idle for a short time
• flawless (clean) catalyst and DPF
